The Town HistoryWrightsville Beach consists of a six-kilometer or four-mile-long beach island, a small internal island called Harbor Island, and a few isolated pieces of commercial property on the mainland. It served as a location for Dawson's Creek television show filming.
Charles Harrison received a land grant from the Lord's Proprietor in 1725, which is the earliest known history of what is now Wrightsville Beach.
This marked the start of the region's historical record. The property grant comprised 640 acres (259 hectares) and was located north of the current Heide Trask Bridge. It traverses the Intracoastal Waterway.
This set the precedence for official ownership of land on the waterfront. The Hammocks could be reached by footbridge from the mainland throughout the 1700s and 1800s. During the same period, the beach was only accessible by boat at the time.
Town DevelopmentSeven neighborhood men with love for sailing and boat racing founded the Carolina Yacht Club in 1883. Today, the Carolina Yacht Club is on record as the seventh-oldest yacht club in the country.
The Carolina Yacht Club was the first permanent building on the waterfront, and at the time, it could only be accessed by boat.
The development of a few isolated homes and commercial buildings then took place on what was at the time known as Ocean View Beach. The town, formerly known as Wrightsville, was given its current name in honor of Wilmington native Joshua G. Wright (1842–1890). He had established a local real estate business.
The area saw the establishment of the Wrightsville Post Office in 1881. When Shell Road was completed in 1887, it made it simpler to reach the beach and take in the wonderful panorama. Shell Road extends from Wilmington to the edge of the current Intracoastal Waterway.
Wrightsville Beach was incorporated as a municipality in 1899. It was named in honor of the Wright family of Wilmington and the Wrightsville community, located on the mainland of Harbor Island.

Still StandingMany storms of varying magnitude have hit Wrightsville Beach.
Two catastrophic hurricanes hit in 1899, killing thousands of people. On August 17th, the season's first hurricane made landfall off the coast of North Carolina and caused devastation at Wrightsville Beach.
A second storm made it ashore on November 1st during high tide, just south of Wrightsville Beach, close to the first one.
Hurricane Hazel hit the area in 1954; it remains the only category 4 cyclone to batter North Carolina.
Other notable storms to hit the area include Hurricane Connie in 1955, Hurricanes Bertha and Fran in 1996, and Hurricane Dennis in 1999.  The latter was accompanied by heavy rains and 140–160 km/h or 90–100 mph gusts, causing a catastrophic flooding disaster.
But even after these events, residents picked up and continued to develop the town into a charming beach area ideal for first-time settlement or peaceful retirement.
